Tower Mills

A tower mill is a kind of windmill which consists of a brick or stone tower, which has a roof that can be turned so that the sails can be brought into the wind.

Because of the rotating roof, the tower mill was a lot more efficient than the traditional windmill.

The tower mill was used mainly from the 1300's up to the 1900's. It was an important source of power for Europe and contributed to nearly a quarter of all power generated by wind machines.

Alas, these mills were deemed to be quite expensive due to the nature of the internal workings and complexity of building the rotating roof. They were deemed to be the choice of the more wealthy person of the era and were not financially viable to the rest of the public.
